Have you ever had a special word jump out at you? I have. My special word is "Believe". Everywhere I go this word jumps out at me. It is truly my "power" word.
I hold on to it when I am trying something new. I think about it when I have children that are struggling with self esteem and I rely on it during tough times. Even the quote in my Teachers Pay Teachers store is about believing. It is no wonder that I decided to see what "power" words my students would come up with when I returned to school in the fall. 
In my home, over the last little while, I have noticed items have been added to my belongings. Guess what! Many of them contain the words and sentiments of my power word. Here are a couple of things I came across during Christmas break.
These little gems were at a local liquidation store.
My students are so cute. They know that this is my power word, so when they find something with the word believe on it, they make sure to share it with me. One of my students even gave me a Christmas card with the word "Believe" on it.

Ukulele Workshop, Heritage Projects, Skating, Games, and Facebook Free-For-All Make Up My Week1/24/2014 
Wow! What a busy week! I am excited to share what has been happening this week with you. I am linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for Five for Friday so that I can keep everything organized. Here are some of the highlights of my week.
On the weekend we had our annual Vancouver Island Ukulele Workshop. It was very busy, but all went well. We had about 30 people attending that ranged from new players to advanced. Some were university students, and some were seniors. Several teachers also attended. The excitement was evident throughout the day and people had a great time singing and playing.
This is my son with my grandson. No they weren't at the workshop, but I couldn't resist using this picture to share about learning to play the ukulele.
Heritage Project Celebration
Monday we shared our heritage projects with families and friends. This was a big project for my little grade 2 and 3 students, but they did an amazing job. Check out the photos below to see samples of what they created. More importantly, they were able to talk about their countries and how they were important in their lives. It was awesome to see their beaming faces as the parents talked to them. 
In December we had a big challenge for reading. We had to create a chain that went from one end of the school to the other end in order to cheer up Grumpy Santa. Each link of the chain was 20-30 minutes of reading. As a celebration for completing the challenge, the whole school went skating today. Half of the school went in the morning, and the other half went in the afternoon.
I have been busy creating more Dolch word games using winter themes. Here is my latest one. I just finished it last night. My kids have fun using it to play WORDS today. Each set is a different sport theme so it is easy to identify when using only some sets. Click here to find out more about the product. Finally, I have been working with an amazing group of teachers for the past couple of weeks preparing for a Facebook Free-For-All blog hop that is beginning at midnight tonight.
Monday was our first day back at school. We had a lot of fun pretending that we were having a New Year's Eve celebration. We did some photo booth shots using the props from the product below. We also used a freebie top hat, but I forgot where it came from, and there is no name on the file. If anyone knows the creator, please let me know so I can give the credit to her.
We also did some great winter break writing. It took us all week, but I am proud of the results. We used this package as our template. Even some of my struggling students were able to handle this well. I was so proud of their efforts.
For Math, we used some New Year's activities as well. That seems to be the theme this week. We used Cynthia Vautrot's Happy New Year Countdown. I used this last year, and I liked it, so I decided to use it again this year.
I also found that we were scrambling to get our maps and flags ready for our heritage projects that are due next week. This project was a daunting one for my little grade 2 students. I think I will wait until later in the year next time. My grade 3 students were able to handle it much better. The folders of materials went home today. Next week, we will begin the class presentations and the celebration with the parents is scheduled for Jan. 20.
Finally, I was thinking about all the teachers that were dealing with snow and frigid weather. Here we have had a mild winter so far. I decided to make this freebie.
